Bristol is both a county and a city within that county, situated in the south west of England. Bristol the city has a population of some four hundred and twelve thousand people, making it England's sixth largest city. It was the 2nd or 3rd largest city for over 500 years but was overtaken by a number of cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool during the Industrial Revolution.
The county of Bristol is bordered by Gloucestershire and Somerset. In recent years the city of Bristol was part of the Avon county, until it was abolished in 1996. Confusingly, some elements of Avon still remain such as the Avon Fire and Rescue Service and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
